Furuno moves to solid-state radar technology for X-band line

Furuno has introduced its new solid-state X-band Radar and Chart Radar systems, allowing the company to offer a complete range of magnetron-free Radar/Chart Radar systems in both X-band and S-band for the first time.

The new X-band models will be added to the FAR-2xx8/3xx0 NXT Series from summer 2020, removing the magnetron found on previous systems to reduce power consumption and the number of equipment parts needing maintenance.

The solid-state technology uses electronic components instead of a magnetron to generate microwaves, which also removes the need for pre-heating and speeds up initial operation.

“As a leader in marine electronics, Furuno is committed to providing ever more efficient tools to ensure safety at sea, while respecting the world’s environmental objectives,” said Furuno, in a statement marking the launch of the products.
