NORMA Cyber to expand membership to other Nordic countries

Norwegian maritime cyber security organisation NORMA Cyber has announced plans to expand its reach and bring in members from neighbouring Nordic countries.

NORMA Cyber was launched in 2021 as an initiative of the Norwegian shipping community, with the Norwegian War Risk Association (DNK) and The Norwegian Shipowners’ Association (NSA) joining forces to establish a cyber security centre focused on providing support for the nation’s maritime industry.

The non-profit membership-based organisation has since grown to 118 members, incorporating shipping companies, ports, terminals, classification societies, and maritime vendors. NORMA Cyber says that it has now begun officially expanding that membership to Swedish, Danish, Finnish and Icelandic maritime companies.

The move is the result of a process that involved a trial period with Swedish and Finnish shipowners, and discussions among current members within its Member Council.

“The expansion will hopefully contribute to further develop information sharing and centralised functions within incident and crisis response in the maritime sector in the Nordics,” said Capt Filip Svensson, Chair of the NORMA Cyber Member Council and Senior Safety, Quality & Security Manager at Wallenius Wilhelmsen.

“We believe this to be crucial factors to succeed in building a cyber resilient industry. An expansion to the Nordics is a natural move forward for an organisation supporting an international industry with a complex and ever-changing threat landscape.”

NORMA Cyber says that it will also offer an affiliate membership for international companies to participate in information sharing initiatives and receive threat intelligence reports.
