ORBCOMM launches onboard smart container monitoring

ORBCOMM reports that it has launched CrewView, an onboard visibility system allowing vessel crews to monitor smart refrigerated and dry containers in real time while at sea.

The system is designed to address existing gaps in end-to-end container tracking, enabling crews to detect temperature deviations, power failures and other issues in transit.

Notifications are delivered via SMS to mobile devices onboard without requiring satellite connectivity, while data is also transmitted to shore-based teams for continuous monitoring.

“CrewView solves a critical blind spot in end-to-end container monitoring and management,” said Sameer Agrawal, ORBCOMM’s CEO.

“By automating monitoring tasks, detecting issues early and enabling data-driven decisions, CrewView optimises crew efficiency, helps to reduce cargo spoilage, enhances crew safety and provides visibility and transparency for customers—both onboard and onshore.”

Integrated with the ORBCOMM Maritime platform, CrewView displays container loading and stowage data through interactive bay, row and tier maps. APIs support data exchange with third-party platforms and enable alerts from external devices.

The software incorporates technology from Vobal Technologies, which ORBCOMM acquired assets from in May 2025.
