DEEP Manufacturing has received full Approval of Manufacture (AoM) from DNV for Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), a form of 3D printing that uses melted metal wire to create complex metal components.
The UK-based firm, launched earlier this year, says it is now one of only a handful of manufacturers worldwide approved under DNV’s WAAM standard.
The approval follows an earlier Approval in Principle from DNV Maritime and covers the use of WAAM in producing pressure vessels, pressure vessels for human occupancy, and hull structures and equipment.
“WAAM and Additive Manufacturing (AM) techniques have made great strides over the past several years, creating new potential efficiencies in logistics and supply chains, as well as maintenance and repair,” said Thorsten Lohmann, Head of Materials & Welding at DNV Maritime.
“At DNV we are committed to enabling these technologies through our evolving AM rules, to ensure that we build this segment on a foundation of expert and independent safety and quality standards.”
The company says the approval positions WAAM as a commercially viable option for applications in the offshore, maritime, and subsea industries.
