The Freeport of Riga has hosted a large-scale demonstration of 5G-enabled port technologies, with the aim of highlighting how high-speed data networks can drive operational efficiency across port environments.
The event, organised by mobile connectivity firm LMT, took place at the Baltic Container Terminal and featured live applications running on a private 5G network deployed across the port.
Demonstrations included drone-based crane inspections, underwater drones for water quality monitoring and oil spill response, and autonomous surface vessels (USVs) for cargo handling and environmental surveillance.
Since 2020, the Freeport of Riga Authority has collaborated with LMT and subsidiary LVR Fleet to test and develop 5G and drone-based systems in real operating conditions.
“For us, being a port authority means playing a key role as an enabler of new technologies — strengthening our competitive advantage, facilitating the energy transition, and increasing our resilience for the future,” said Ansis Zeltins, CEO of the Freeport of Riga Authority.
Earlier this year, LMT launched the first private 5G network in the Baltics at the Baltic Container Terminal. The company has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Port of Hamburg and Fleet of Hamburg to strengthen cooperation on maritime innovation in the region.
