COSCO and LR launch International Maritime Future Technologies Innovation Centre

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has joined forces with COSCO Shipping Group, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and the University of Southampton to launch the International Maritime Future Technologies Innovation Centre, a new global research initiative focused on accelerating the development of zero-carbon and intelligent ship technologies.

The virtual centre aims to serve as a collaborative platform between academia and industry, dedicated to converting research outcomes into scalable solutions that can be applied across international fleets to support the maritime sector’s decarbonisation and digitalisation goals.

Led by COSCO Shipping Group, the Centre will leverage each partner’s expertise in areas including technical standards, alternative fuels, vessel performance, and digital modelling.

Using COSCO’s operational data and fleet network, the partners plan to conduct testing and validation of technologies to deliver practical efficiency and emission reduction outcomes. A Technical Committee has also been formed to guide research priorities and align the Centre’s work with evolving regulatory and industry needs.

The initiative builds on earlier collaboration between LR, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and the Shanghai Shipping and Science Research Institute, which developed a techno-economic model for fleet energy transition. That model assessed multiple decarbonisation pathways and costs to support data-driven decision-making for ship operators.

“This partnership is about turning ambition into action,” said Nick Brown, Chief Executive Officer at Lloyd’s Register.

“Together with our partners, we are investing in the ideas, data and technologies that will help the maritime industry meet the challenges of the energy transition head-on and drive change that benefits both business and society.”
