San Diego-based maritime technology company Seasats has announced that a Lightfish uncrewed surface vessel (USV) has completed the first autonomous transit of the Taiwan Strait.
The vessel was deployed from hundreds of kilometres away and traversed the full length of the waterway separating Taiwan and mainland China over five days, covering more than 1,000 nautical miles.
To date, Seasats has been awarded more than US$100 million in U.S. government contracts and has deployed its vessels with the US Navy, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and research institutions worldwide.
The company is backed by investors including Konvoy Ventures, Shield Capital, and L3Harris Technologies.
Looking forward, Seasats says it is actively engaging with Taiwan and allied forces across the Indo-Pacific region to deploy and scale persistent maritime domain awareness.
