Optimal Transit unveils latest 100 MW offshore AI platform

Optimal Transit has unveiled a second configuration of its Kraaken maritime data centre platform, designed to provide baseload electricity and fresh water to shore while retaining capacity for AI compute.

The Blue Economy VITAL 100 MW Kraaken uses the same small waterplane area twin hull (SWATH) architecture, flexible mooring system and Digital Ocean Thermal (DOT) self-powering engine as the platform’s data centre configuration.

The configuration is designed to export up to 40 MW of continuous electricity to shore, while producing approximately 30 million litres of fresh water per day through vacuum-flash desalination.

A further 60 MW of capacity will be available for AI-grade data centre operations.

The company says the electricity output would be sufficient to serve approximately 32,000 homes, while the daily water production could support an estimated 150,000 people.

All three outputs are connected to shore through a quick-disconnect umbilical system, allowing the vessel to disconnect and relocate when required.

Optimal Transit says the vessel has an all-in capital cost of approximately $587 million, compared with an estimated $750 million to $1.33 billion for a land-based combination of a 40 MW power plant, desalination facility and 60 MW data centre shell.

The company estimates that the offshore platform could be operational in approximately three years, compared with six to 10 years for the equivalent land-based infrastructure.

The architecture is also intended to support multi-vessel deployments, with five Kraaken vessels configured as a ‘Sovereign Power Park’ providing approximately 200 MW of baseload power, 40 million gallons of fresh water per day and 300 MW of data centre capacity.
