GHG data governance framework for Ro-Ro shipping launched

The Global Ro-Ro Community (GRC) has established the GRC Council (GRCC) to oversee the use of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data across the Ro-Ro shipping sector.

The GRC, established in 2024, brings together Ro-Ro carriers, independent verifiers, cargo owners and other stakeholders, with participants representing approximately 80% of the transport capacity of the global car carrier fleet.

The GRCC will oversee the ongoing review of the GRC’s emissions accounting methodology, data handling rules and governance documents.

The framework is intended to support the use of verified emissions data by Ro-Ro carriers, cargo owners and vehicle manufacturers, including for Scope 3 emissions management.

ClassNK, a participant in the GRC since its establishment, will act as an independent verifier of GHG emissions data in accordance with the GRC Methodology.

The classification society also contributed to the development of the GRC Governance Framework and data handling rules ahead of the GRCC’s establishment.

The GRC Methodology is aligned with ISO 14083 and the GLEC Framework and enables vessel-level GHG emissions intensity factors to be calculated from independently verified primary data.
