Flexport launches AI automated freight booking and tracking

Flexport has launched a series of AI-based technologies for global freight management, including an interface that allows external AI agents to track shipments, search rates and make bookings through the company’s platform.

The Flexport Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server allows customers to connect external AI systems, including ChatGPT, Claude and Microsoft Copilot, to Flexport and issue logistics requests in natural language.

An AI agent can submit cargo details, book against negotiated rates and return a booking reference and transit time without the user accessing the Flexport platform directly.

The company says a fleet of specialised AI agents is already operating across its platform, processing around 21 million tasks annually. These include automated quotation and other operational activities, with exceptions routed to human staff and AI actions tracked through Flexport’s evaluation system.

Flexport has also updated its Atlas platform, adding multimodal routing covering ocean, air, rail and barge transport, an AI-based disruption monitoring layer and per-container emissions estimates for ocean routes.

The company has further expanded its customs technology with the ability for customers to create audit rules based on their own operating procedures. These rules can be applied to US customs entries in real time, with the Netherlands and UK planned for subsequent rollout.
