26-28 September 2023
One Plenary Conference - Seven Focused Tech Workshops - Two Nights of Networking Events
Three Days of SMAGIC Moments
The SMAGIC Word
The inaugural Smart Maritime Annual Global Innovation Congress (#SMAGIC) will take place in Copenhagen from 26-28 September 2023.
This one-of-a-kind event will explore maritime technology and innovation through curated content and networking opportunities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs/Invest in Denmark will kindly host the plenary SMN conference on 27 September, at Eitgveds Pakhus, with additional official support from the Danish Maritime Authority (DMA), Danish Shipping, Danish Maritime, BIMCO, and WISTA Denmark.
Building on the success of previous Smart Maritime Network (SMN) annual conferences worldwide, in Tokyo, Singapore, Dubai, Miami, Rotterdam, and Athens, SMAGIC '23 will offer a unique programme of events exploring the latest in maritime digitalisation and innovation.
During the three-day event, some of the industry's leading technology providers will host events focused on their own individual areas of expertise, aligned with the wider overview of maritime digitalisation to be discussed at the SMN plenary conference. These seminars will take place on 26 & 28 September at NH Collection Copenhagen, located next to the plenary conference venue at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' venue.
SMAGIC will also feature two industry networking evenings: a Welcome Reception at Copenhagen's City Hall on 26 September, and Night SMAGIC, led by some of SMN’s key partners, at selected venues across Copenhagen on 27 September. These events will provide an opportunity for delegates, speakers, partners, and invited guests to connect in an informal setting.
We look forward to seeing you and sharing the SMAGIC with you! For more information, please contact us at: cathy.hodge@smartmaritimenetwork.com.

- Seminar 1 - Hosted by The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping 09:00
How can digitalization accelerate the transformation to a more energy efficient fleet
Energy efficiency will play a key role in the decarbonisation strategy of the maritime industry with high short and mid term ambitions at the international, regional, and corporate level. Focusing on the energy efficiency of the world fleet will not only reduce the future costs of operating vessels with new fuels but will also reduce the short-term CO2 emissions from fossil fuels and minimize the amount of renewable energy needed to produce these new fuels. Digitalization can play a key enabling role in this journey by providing solutions to accelerate the adoption of both technical and operational measures.
In this Seminar we will discuss the role digitalization can play as an enabler for energy efficiency including:
*What are the challenges we are facing as an industry with regards to onboard data collection, standardization for improved collaboration, energy efficiency metrics, and transparent engagement?
*How can digitalization remove these impediments?
*What can we do as an industry so that by 2030 digitalization has contributed to achieving a significant reduction in the energy demand of the world fleet? - Coffee & Networking Break 10:30
- Seminar 2 - Hosted by Inmarsat Maritime 11:00
Proactive Approach to Maritime Safety
As the shipping industry embraces significant digital and green transformation, it has a pivotal opportunity, and responsibility, to proactively understand and address safety concerns associated with the introduction of new fuels and technologies onboard. Aiming to establish these main safety concerns currently facing the shipping industry, Inmarsat, in collaboration with SeaFocus International, has examined data from Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) calls made to Inmarsat in 2023. In this workshop, we will present the key findings from the report and discuss how we can improve practices to avoid similar setbacks in the future, protect the lives of seafarers and vessels they operate, consequently enhancing the safety track record of the maritime industry, with the ultimate goal of transitioning towards a proactive safety approach utilising technology, data and analytics. - Lunch Break 12:30

- Panel Discussion: How Leadership, Culture & Diversity are Integral to Maritime’s Digital Era 16:15
In today’s disruptive environment, the Future of Talent Acquisition and Retention must be reimagined. Those employers that approach culture by design rather than by default will have a competitive advantage now, and for years to come.
Effective leadership in this digital era involves leveraging technology to drive progress, streamline operations, and embrace innovation. Inclusive leadership and the inclusion of diversity can help to foster a mindset, and culture, of continuous learning, adaptability, willingness to cooperate, and openness to change. This panel session during SMAGIC 2023 will illustrate how the successful integration of Inclusive Leadership, Diversity, and Culture, will ensure that the maritime industry remains agile, competitive, and resilient in the face of evolving technological advancements and constant disruption.
*Culture accelerates business strategy
Nearly every company has adjusted its strategy in some way during the COVID period. When strategy changes, culture must evolve in support of it. Strong cultures protect companies against unforeseen disruptions.
*The inclusion of diversity fosters innovation
Successful leaders aren't just hiring more diverse talent, they're approaching their business with an inclusive mindset. They're bringing multiple, diverse perspectives to the table and creating environments where everyone feels empowered to influence decision-making. *All talents thrive under Inclusive leadership
The role of an Enterprise Leader is to create an environment where people are encouraged to share their perspectives and then ensure those voices are included in the decisions. The collective intelligence of a group increases when more people take a turn speaking.

Mikael Skov, CEO, Hafnia
Ulla Eithz Nielsen, Managing Director, V.Ships Germany, V.Group
Jocelyn Hansen, President, WISTA Denmark
Dita Bruijn, Head of Terminals, DFDS - Announcing the Winner of the Standardised Data Innovation Challenge 17:15
A group of eight maritime and logistics technology companies were selected as finalists for the Standardised Data Innovation Challenge (SDIC), an initiative offering tech firms in the shipping space the opportunity to work with standardised data sets from some of Japan’s biggest maritime companies via the Internet of Ships Open Platform (IoS-OP).
The Challenge, run by Smart Maritime Network and ClassNK with the support of Japan’s ‘big three’ shipping companies ‘K’ Line, MOL and NYK, as well as other members of the IoS-OP consortium, received more than 60 applicants, offering a variety of technologies promising to deliver improvements in areas including decarbonisation, predictive maintenance, remote decision support and port call optimisation.
We will be announcing the winner of this Challenge at SMAGIC'23.
