REAL DATA. REAL PARTNERS.

The Standardised Data Innovation Challenge is an opportunity for maritime technology companies to demonstrate innovative solutions capable of creating business value from the data stored within the IoS-OP distribution platform, which utilises a common centralised standardised data hub called Ship Data Center (ShipDC) to connect Japan’s biggest shipping companies, shipyards, technology providers and other industry stakeholders.

The IoS-OP (Internet of Ships Open Platform) was originally developed by the Japanese maritime sector to enable the sharing of vessel operational data, harmonised to ISO standards, among shipbuilders, manufacturers, and related service providers in a manner that protects the commercial interests of all parties. Since its launch in 2018, the consortium of members of the IoS-OP has now grown to include more than 60 organisations.

The winners of the Standardised Data Innovation Challenge will have the opportunity to work with that store of vessel data and show how their solutions can turn standardised data into real world business value for the vessel operators and other related organisations on the platform.

Selected challenge entrants will have the opportunity to develop their technologies in partnership with major Japanese shipping companies, including NYK, MOL, and K-Line, as a member of the IoS-OP for up to five years. Membership fees, worth more than €10,000, will be covered by the challenge hosts for the chosen companies.

In addition, the winners will also receive mentorship from experts within the IoS-OP consortium, gain access to further funding opportunities form participating stakeholders, and will be offered membership in the Smart Maritime Council. An advertising and marketing package worth over €10,000 will also be made available to the chosen applications to assist them in presenting their solutions to a global audience.

The Standardised Data Innovation Challenge will accept applications from the worldwide community of maritime technology entrepreneurs, although we actively encourage applications from new businesses and potential start-ups.

THE PITCH

The Pitch session for applicants selected as finalists will take place at the Smart Maritime Network Tokyo Conference on 30 August 2023, in front of a panel of judges. Pitches delivered in person live at the event are preferred, though online pitches may be accepted in certain circumstances.

The 3 selected winners will be given the opportunity to develop their solutions as members of the IoS-OP platform for 3-5 years (fees covered), along with financial support and an invitation to develop a proof of concept with their technology using real vessel IoT data stored at ShipDC from IoS-OP members including ‘K’ Line, MOL and NYK.

The winners will also receive dedicated presentation opportunities at IoS-OP forums and meetings, as well as ongoing advice, support and partnership from within the IoS-OP consortium, working directly with Japanese shipping companies and other maritime stakeholders.

APPLICATIONS

Applicants may submit their proposals here, which will then be evaluated by a panel of maritime, technology and entrepreneurial experts involved in IoS-OP and the Japanese shipping cluster.

Applications are being curated by our partners at global startup network FS6.

Shortlisted applicants will be contacted and may be asked further questions or to expand on their application. After this initial evaluation process, the finalists will be invited to join the Smart Maritime Network Tokyo Conference (on 30 August) to deliver their pitch in front of a live audience and our panel of Innovation Challenge judges.

Submission Deadline – All applicants should submit their applications by Tuesday 8 August 2023, 5pm JST. Entries must be submitted in English. If you have any questions, please contact us here.
