KR adds new CII tools to emissions reporting software

KR (Korean Register) has launched a newly upgraded version of its GHG Emission Authentic Reporting system (GEARs), to assist users in managing compliance with emissions regulations.

Originally launched in 2019, GEARs has added new features including a real-time CII monitor, CII simulator, ETS calculator and SEEMP Part III & CII, EU/UK MRV services.

The application could previously calculate CII ratings based on approved DCS data, however the new version uses current operational data to allow the CII rating to be derived and managed in real-time.

The new CII Simulator tool is used to automatically calculate and predict a ships’ CO2 emissions and any CII reduction effects. Scenarios and reports are generated as each condition is selected, such as sailing speed, fuel type, operational measures and installation of energy-saving devices.

Another new feature is an Emissions Trading System (ETS) Calculator. Users can predict ETS costs by entering vessel information and ETS unit pricing. KR says it plans to expand this service in the near future by integrating carbon spot and futures market information to calculate estimated ETS costs in real-time.

“The new upgrade of KR GEARs will enable our customers to respond quickly and flexibly to ensure compliance of their existing vessels. We will continue our efforts to advance our technologies to support the decarbonisation of the maritime industry,” said Kim Daeheon, Executive Vice President of the KR R&D Division.
