The third edition of Smart Maritime Annual Global Innovation Congress (#SMAGIC) has been confirmed to take place in Copenhagen from 29 September to 1 October 2026.

This one-of-a-kind event will explore maritime technology and innovation through curated content and networking opportunities. The event will be delivered with support from the Danish Maritime Authority (DMA), Danish Shipping, Danske Maritime, WISTA Denmark, and a host of other partner organisations.

The centrepiece event of Smart Maritime Network's (SMN) series of worldwide conferences for 2026, with locations including Tokyo, Singapore, Dubai, Rotterdam, and Athens, SMAGIC '26 will offer a unique programme of events exploring the latest in maritime digitalisation and innovation.

With a programme designed to spark collaboration between industry, government, academia, and innovators, the congress provides a strategic platform to shape the future of maritime.

More than 300 international attendees are expected to join, including shipowners, ports, regulators, technology providers, investment partners, maritime authorities, government bodies, and maritime start-ups. This year’s programme introduces new sessions to elevate engagement and legacy – from student and start-up access initiatives to Danish maritime site visits.

SMAGIC will also feature networking evenings providing an opportunity for delegates, speakers, partners, and invited guests to connect in an informal setting, including the much anticipated Night SMAGIC social mixer!

Background: The maritime industry is entering a new era where technologies originally developed for commercial applications are increasingly being adopted for defence and security purposes, while defence-led innovation is rapidly finding relevance in commercial shipping.

Autonomous systems, AI-enabled decision support, remote operations, advanced sensing technologies, cybersecurity, and resilient communications are becoming critical capabilities across both sectors. At the same time, heightened geopolitical tensions, concerns around critical maritime infrastructure protection, and increased investment in defence innovation across Northern Europe are accelerating interest in dual-use maritime technologies.

This workshop aims to explore how commercial and defence sectors can learn from one another to strengthen resilience, improve operational effectiveness, and support responsible adoption of maritime autonomy.

JIT Arrivals, What COS Validation Taught Us

Every port call still runs on the same broken handoff: ships steaming to make a berth that isn't ready, pilots and terminals working off schedules nobody fully trusts, and stakeholders reconciling the same information across spreadsheets, emails, and siloed systems.
Last year at SMAGIC, we introduced the OCIANA® Collaborative Optimisation Solution (COS) — a shared, real-time environment built to close that gap and enable true Just-in-Time arrivals. A year later, COS has moved from concept to controlled validation in the St. Lawrence corridor, and this session picks up exactly where we left off.
We'll walk through what changed, what the Observer Group's feedback forced us to rethink, and the integration challenges that only surface once real ports, pilots, and shipping lines are in the loop — then give a first look at early Operational Validation Testing results.
We're demoing live again, this time featuring a new addition built directly from last year's feedback: a Just-in-Time Scenario Analysis Tool that lets stakeholders test berthing and speed scenarios before committing to them.

From Hardware Graveyard to Edge Intelligence: Rethinking the Connected Ship

Every new onboard system arrives as another box, with its own hardware, its own update cycle, its own failure mode. At fleet scale, that's a crisis. And with real pressure to run AI workloads at sea (predictive maintenance, fuel optimization, anomaly detection), you can't wait for a satellite window.

This session shows how operators consolidate onto a single edge platform running multiple vendors' apps side by side, remotely managed from shore, with the processing power to act on data locally and sync when connectivity allows. The vessel becomes an intelligent hosting environment, not a hardware graveyard.

The Promise, the Threat, and the Trap: AI and Cyber Realities in Maritime

How organizations are really using AI, where it breaks, and why you are the missing piece

AI is likely already inside your organization. Someone may be drafting policies with it, building training content, summarizing regulations, and most of it may be happening without an audit trail. This workshop starts with a live look at how the room is actually using AI: the good, the bad and the ugly. The promise is real: faster policy drafts, multilingual training, gap assessments, instant dissection of standards and requirements. The threat: attackers get the same acceleration. The trap: hallucinated regulations, wrong vessel procedures and confident nonsense, demonstrated live on stage (for illustration only) with cybersecurity procedures as the example. And as maritime operations become more digitalized and software-dependent, the stakes for getting this right only increase. That is where the part that matters comes in. AI is an accelerant, not an authority. It can build the framework and analyze the standard, but it cannot finish the job. The missing piece is the operator, the mariner, the master who knows their vessel, their operations and their ports better than anyone, in the loop and applying it. The session is designed to help attendees answer three questions for their own operation: what to hand AI tomorrow, what to never let it decide and who checks its work before it matters.

A candid discussion with Andre Simha, Board Member, Strategic Advisor and Former CDIO at MSC.

In 2019, just before Smart Maritime Network and DCSA formally launched, Cathy Hodge and Rob O’Dwyer first met André Simha as the industry was beginning to grapple with what maritime digitalisation might really mean.

Seven years later, André has completed an almost 40-year career with MSC, where he helped lead one of the industry’s most significant digital transformation journeys, and is now working as a board member and strategic advisor, including continued involvement with digital standards and industry collaboration.

This on-stage conversation will look back at what has changed, what has not, and what the maritime industry still needs to get right. The discussion will explore the evolution of digital transformation from internal technology programmes to cross-industry collaboration, the rise of AI, the importance of standards, the role of people and culture, and what the next chapter of maritime innovation might look like.
