CMA CGM to trial Variable Compression Ratio tech on dual-fuel engines

Shipping line CMA CGM is to trial a new Variable Compression Ratio (VCR) dual-fuel engine technology onboard one of its vessels, developed by Swiss marine power company WinGD.

The collaboration marks the first field test for the system following the completion of factory tests showing efficiency improvements with both diesel and LNG fuel.

VCR dynamically adapts cylinder compression ratios in dual-fuel engines based on fuel selection, ambient conditions and engine load, to optimise fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

CMA CGM will conduct a long-term test of the system to confirm its suitability and reliability, expected to begin following the dry-docking of the vessel in September, when VCR will be installed on its WinGD RT flex50DF dual-fuel engine.
