FuelEU Maritime applications launched by zero44 and StormGeo

Germany-based start-up zero44 and Norwegian-headquartered StormGeo have both announced the launch of new applications to allow users to manage their compliance strategies for upcoming FuelEU Maritime regulations.

The zero44 software will be an addition to the company’s existing systems for EU ETS and CII compliance, as well as its free online FuelEU Maritime Calculator launched earlier this year. The new offering aims to identify the most economically viable options to reach compliance with the new regulations based on changing parameters including fuel prices, schedule changes for vessels, varying availability of fuel in different ports and agreements in charter and ship management contracts.

The application can be used as a standalone or in combination with zero44’s EU ETS and CII compliance software modules to identify an overall strategy that takes the impact of all of the different regulatory environments into account.

“Some players in our industry are currently giving the impression that pooling is the best way to achieve FuelEU compliance. This is far too short-sighted and does not do justice to the complexity of FuelEU Maritime and the volatility of the market environment,” said Friederike Hesse, Co-Founder and Managing Director of zero44.

“Instead, the goal must be for every shipping company, every ship manager and every charterer to have a full overview of all economic parameters at all times. Only on this basis can truly informed decisions be made – and whether these ultimately fall in favour of pooling, penalty payments or another method will always change depending on the context.”

The FuelEU Maritime product utilises existing zero44 data models incorporating historical ship performance data and machine learning to predict future consumption and emissions and evaluate different fuel options.

Users can then compare all options in the dashboard – the amount of a possible penalty payment, alternative biofuel costs, pooling options and other alternatives. If pooling is a sensible strategy, the company also offers a pooling marketplace between its customers and third parties.

Similar to zero44, Alfa Laval-owned StormGeo’s own FuelEU Maritime application is an addition to its existing portfolio of environmental compliance software, alongside its tools for IMO DCS, EU/UK MRV, CII, and EU ETS.

The new offering allows users to monitor compliance with FuelEU Maritime standards by utilising vessel data to deliver insights into GHG intensity performance, while an incorporated data validation process identifies and flags reporting errors before calculating metrics.

The company says that this unified process, from onboard data reporting to validation and calculation of GHG Intensity, eliminates delays and minimises the risks of missing deadlines while ensuring maximum data quality.

In addition, stakeholders can assess the costs that derive from complying with the FuelEU Maritime regulations using dashboards, simulations, and calculations built on validated data directly from their vessels.

‘‘StormGeo FuelEU Maritime marks another important milestone in our product development, as it highlights our commitment to making energy transition more manageable for our customers and the maritime industry,” said Petter Andersen, Senior Vice President Shipping at StormGeo.

“With the addition of FuelEU Maritime in our platform, we remain focused on delivering the right solutions at the right time, enabling our clients to simply ‘get the job done’ in the most efficient way, as market leaders do.’’
