Seoul National University’s College of Engineering has been granted a £4 million (approx. $5.2 million) grant by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation to fund research into improving safety in shipping.
The South Korean university will receive the funds to support its research over the next five years, focusing on three areas where evidence gaps need to be addressed to drive the development of standards and safer operations.
This includes designs of fuel tanks and systems to reduce the safety risks associated with using alternative fuels; risk prediction and prevention, specifically addressing dynamic instability and loss of manoeuvrability in waves; and development and application of digital techniques to enhance safety at sea.
“The innovative research and development at SNU will not only advance maritime safety but also contribute significantly to addressing global challenges such as climate change and energy transition,” said Ruth Boumphrey, CEO at Lloyd’s Register Foundation.

The project will be based at the Lloyd’s Register Foundation Research Center for Safety of Future Ship at Seoul National University.
