A new EU-backed project called ‘TwinShip’ has been launched, with the aim of developing a system for the maritime industry that can improve access to reliable data in support of smarter shipping decarbonisation decisions.
The consortium includes ABS, Wärtsilä, Stena and Grimaldi Group among more than a dozen technology and service providers, ship design and shipping companies, classification societies, ports, software developers, and research and academic bodies taking part.
The partners plan to develop a Decision Support System (DSS) that can be used when planning different setups of machinery, propulsion and energy-saving devices for newbuilds and retrofits, delivering reliable cost, performance and emissions data based on the best domain knowledge available.
This, in turn, will be further improved through AI-based algorithms that can analyse vast amounts of real test data. The project results will then be validated through four pilot vessel demonstrations.
The project is set to run from 2025 until 2028 and has a budget of approx. €9 million.
