H-Line Shipping to adopt autonomous navigation technology

H-Line Shipping in Korea has agreed a deal with compatriot company Avikus, HD Hyundai’s autonomous navigation technology subsidiary, for the supply of the HiNAS Control system to H-Line’s fleet.

H-Line, one of Korea’s largest shipping companies, says that it is adopting autonomous navigation with the aim of improving the safety of vessel operations, reducing crew workload, and increasing its ability to effectively respond to environmental regulations through a reduction in fuel consumption.

The company will initially deploy the Avikus technology on five vessels to validate its safety and efficiency, with the intention of expanding its deployment to as many as 30 vessels next year.

In addition to the supply of the autonomous tech, the two companies have also agreed to collaborate on technical support and data analysis to improve the system’s performance.

HiNAS Control is an AI-based autonomous navigation system that integrates information from various navigation equipment and sensors to guide vessels along the optimal route at the optimal speed. The system corresponds to Level 2 autonomy as defined by IMO, which describes a remotely controlled ship with seafarers on board.

“Technological innovation is essential to actively address increasingly stringent environmental regulations and create a sustainable future. The adoption of HiNAS Control is expected to strengthen our global competitiveness,” said Seo Myung Deuk, CEO of H-Line Shipping.
