Ultranav is set to begin a 6-month trial of a behaviour change system designed to encourage fuel-saving practices among crew members.
The Signol service will be used on 19 vessels across Ultranthe fleet with the aim of saving fuel and lowering emissions. Ultranav is an existing investor in Signol, with this trial part of a 3-year contract between the companies.
The system focuses on engaging crews in reducing emissions through their daily tasks, applying behavioural science to motivate the seafarers to make more sustainable and fuel-efficient decisions via a web app and targeted emails.
Examples include the creation of personalised goals based on each crew member’s past actions, and real-time visibility of the user’s personal impact on fuel consumption and emissions, framed in tangible, real-world terms.
Recommendations are provided that highlight opportunities to save fuel, based on what other crew members have done in similar situations.
Signol’s says these techniques have reduced fuel consumption and emissions by 4-12% for other maritime clients.
“We recognise the significant potential in Signol’s service and firmly believe that every tonne of saved CO2 counts. Even small adjustments to our daily routines can contribute to the overall goal,” said Bas Blaak, Head of Energy Efficiency and Sustainability, Ultranav.
“Signol’s data-driven approach aims to motivate and inspire the crew to adopt these changes rather than impose decisions upon them, and this is an approach we value. We look forward to following the results from the trial.”
