Norsepower and Syroco partner on wind-propulsion efficiency

Norsepower has partnered with climate-tech start-up Syroco to optimise wind-assisted propulsion for commercial vessels, combining Norsepower’s Rotor Sails with Syroco’s digital performance analysis to improve efficiency and provide measurement of fuel savings. 

Integrating wind propulsion with Syroco’s AI-driven weather routing could assist vessels in optimising their routes while accounting for wind, waves, and currents, with the companies claiming that their first joint deployment, on the Socatra tanker Alcyone, has delivered validated fuel savings of up to 21% per voyage.

“By accurately validating the performance of Norsepower Rotor Sails and demonstrating how advanced AI can amplify their benefits, we are driving significant progress in sustainable shipping,” said Jarkko Väinämö, CCO at Norsepower.

“Together, we are proving that cleaner, more efficient shipping is not only achievable but measurable.”

Syroco’s platform creates a digital twin of each vessel, incorporating hull design, propulsion systems, and real-time environmental data. This enables ship operators to optimise routing while balancing wind propulsion with operational constraints. 

“By integrating Norsepower Rotor Sails with digital twin models, the Syroco platform helps the crew obtain the most optimised routing at any time and essentially amplifies the effect of wind assistance. This collaboration showcases the great potential of combining innovative technologies to meet the maritime industry’s decarbonisation goals,” said Alex Caizergues, CEO of Syroco.
