Windward has introduced an AI-powered detention and demurrage (D&D) automation system for freight forwarders, designed to process customer contracts and calculate real-time D&D charges while accounting for variables such as tariff extraction, shipment mapping, and contract terms.
The company claims that the system can reduce billing time from over 30 days to under a minute by shifting manual reconciliation processes to AI-driven automation, integrating customer-specific tariffs, port terms, free days, holidays, and working hours to perform calculations.
Windward’s system also includes MAI Expert, a virtual assistant providing real-time cost breakdowns, exception alerts, and visibility into charges. The company says this is the first step in a broader automation initiative aimed at streamlining global trade workflows.
“Detention and demurrage charges are by far one of the biggest pains our customers talk about. It is a financial drain in the freight industry, creating unnecessary operational friction,” said Ami Daniel, CEO and Co-founder of Windward.
“With D&D Automation, we’re taking our AI technology to the next level and providing our customers with the control over the financial operations they need for business growth.”
“This launch is just the first step, as we plan to introduce document management and automation into a wide range of workflows that plague the industry and make our customers grow their business even faster.”
