ClassNK has released benchmark tank test data to support the validation of direct load analysis programs, to be used to assist in the development of new ship types including ultra-large container carriers and alternative fuel vessels.
Direct load analysis is used in hull strength assessments when conventional formulae are insufficient due to novel hull shapes or sizes. Establishing these benchmark datasets as a shared reference between shipyards and class societies is expected to improve the reliability and transparency of structural evaluations, streamlining design approval.
The updated Guidelines for Direct Load Analysis and Strength Assessment version 4.0 outlines requirements for conducting direct load analysis, to support accurate strength assessments based on vessel-specific loading characteristics, as well as requirements recommending comparison with benchmark data to validate analysis accuracy.
The benchmark data from the large-scale tank tests have now been made publicly available on the ClassNK Research Institute website. The datasets cover two ship types—a large container ship and an oil tanker—covering parameters such as hull shape and weight distribution, along with experimental results on ship motions and accelerations.
These benchmarks, covering both slender and fuller hull forms, can be applied across various vessel designs.
