ABS and HD Hyundai Mipo (HMD) have signed a joint development project (JDP) agreement to support the application of digital manufacturing-based automation technologies in shipyard operations.
The partnership will focus on deploying smart systems including artificial intelligence, robotics, and communication technologies at HMD’s facilities. ABS will apply its Guide for Smart Technologies for Shipyards to help identify areas for process improvement, with an emphasis on hyper-connectivity, automation, and data-driven intelligence.
The agreement also includes the potential for additional ABS certifications such as Product Design Assessment or Manufacturing Assessment, subject to standard criteria.
“With this joint development project, we aspire for the digital manufacturing initiative spearheaded by Mipo to receive objective evaluations from certification bodies and establish itself as a global standard,” said Kim Hyung Kwang, HMD President and Chief Executive Officer.
“Furthermore, we hope it will act as a force multiplier for shipowners and classification societies resulting in making construction processes more efficient.”
The agreement also provides a framework for improving shipyard operational procedures and classification survey processes.
