TUI Cruises to cut emissions with digital crew behaviour system

TUI Cruises has partnered with behaviour change technology company Signol to launch a six-month pilot aimed at reducing fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions across its Mein Schiff fleet.

The initiative marks the first application of Signol’s service in the cruise sector, working directly with ship Captains and Chief Engineers to encourage fuel-saving operational behaviours. The system uses performance data and behavioural science to identify fuel efficiency opportunities, delivered via personalised feedback through a web app and email.

“As a young cruise line company, we’ve always ensured that our vessels use the latest and most efficient environmental technologies, but we know that the crew also play a vital role in ensuring that we minimise the environmental impact of our voyages,” said TUI Cruises’ Head of Sustainability, Lucienne Damm.

“Signol enables us to address fuel efficiency at an even deeper level, by actively engaging crew members on how they can make the most of their opportunities to save fuel and reduce emissions.”

The pilot focuses on four operational areas identified through detailed analysis of cruise-specific data, such as encouraging on-time departure to reduce unnecessary engine running time. Each behaviour is tracked, with goals set based on historical performance, and milestones linked to TUI donations to Enaleia, a Greece-based social enterprise that works with fishers to collect and recycle marine plastic.
