Lloyd’s Register (LR) and HD Hyundai MIPO Dockyard (HMD) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on the digitalisation of manufacturing processes for Type C tanks used in LNG and liquefied CO₂ (LCO₂) storage.
The agreement outlines a plan to develop and verify a digital production framework aimed at improving efficiency, consistency and quality assurance in the fabrication of pressurised and cryogenic tanks. The companies expect increased demand for Type C tanks as interest grows in alternative fuels and carbon capture technologies.
HMD will apply digital twin systems and quality assurance technologies to monitor tank production, with LR providing independent verification and technical support throughout the project. The collaboration will run from May 2025 to July 2026.
“With the advancement of digital manufacturing and automation technologies with monitoring systems, consistent quality assurance and verifiable data-based quality certification has become possible,” said Kim Hyung Kwan, CEO of HD Hyundai Mipo.
“This aims to enhance the transparency of quality and establish a shipbuilding production system that shipowners can trust.”
