Navtech Radar and Tocaro Blue partner on autonomous situational awareness

Navtech Radar and Tocaro Blue have agreed a strategic partnership to combine high-resolution W-band radar hardware with machine learning-based radar processing, aiming to support the development of situational awareness systems for autonomous and semi-autonomous vessels.

The collaboration brings together Navtech’s MAS-10 radar system, operational at up to 1km with centimetre-level resolution, and Tocaro Blue’s ProteusCore software, which provides object detection, classification, and tracking in real time.

Navtech says the system is designed to overcome inherent limitations in S- and X-band marine radar that can see those systems struggle to reliably detect small objects at close range and in adverse weather.

“The partnership enables the creation of a robust, all-weather maritime perception system that delivers unprecedented situational awareness, object detection, and classification performance – redefining capability standards in the maritime domain,” said Sam Wood, Segment Lead at Navtech Radar.

The integrated system will target navigation and collision avoidance applications across use cases such as autonomous workboats, coastal monitoring, commercial shipping, and maritime defence, the companies note.
