Marcura reports that it has acquired Brightwell Navigator, the maritime crew payroll division of US fintech company Brightwell, to strengthen its position in the cruise segment and expand its global crew payment capabilities.
Brightwell Navigator will join Marcura’s MarTrust payments business while continuing to operate under its own brand during a transition period. The acquisition creates a combined entity handling crew payments for more than 150,000 seafarers per month across both cruise and commercial shipping.
Brightwell’s COO John Markendorf will remain with the business, taking on the role of President of Brightwell Navigator. As Navigator transitions to Marcura, Brightwell will remain under the leadership of CEO Larry Hipp.
“With 25 years in maritime, Marcura is a proven leader,” said John Markendorf, President, Brightwell Navigator.
“Their scale, focus, and commitment to crew welfare make them the right home for Navigator’s next chapter. This move builds on the foundation we laid at Brightwell and ensures continuity for both our customers and our team.”
The two services will initially align corporate features to allow operators to manage crew payments through a single portal, with a phased integration of Navigator into MarTrust’s next-generation platform planned. Marcura says this structure will retain the specialist capabilities of each product while expanding investment in crew welfare tools.
The company says that it also expects additional synergies across its other Marcura brands, including ShipServ and VesselMan.
The transaction was supported by Marlin Equity Partners, Marcura’s private equity investor.
