HD Hyundai and TerraPower review nuclear shipping developments

HD Hyundai has concluded meetings with the leadership of TerraPower, including its chairman and founder Bill Gates, to review progress on the commercialisation of Natrium reactors.

Natrium reactors are sodium-cooled fast reactors designed by TerraPower and GE Hitachi that combine nuclear fission with a molten salt energy storage system.

The shipbuilder noted that it is working with TerraPower on molten salt reactor technologies for potential application in nuclear-powered vessels.

The companies signed a memorandum of understanding in March to expand the global manufacturing supply chain for Natrium technology.

HD Hyundai has agreed a contract to supply reactor vessels, a key component of TerraPower’s Natrium system, developed in partnership with GE Hitachi. The Generation IV small modular reactor design incorporates sodium cooling and integrated energy storage, producing around 40% less waste than conventional reactors.
