PSA BDP and the A*STAR Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC) in Singapore have launched a three-year research collaboration to apply artificial intelligence to maritime disruption detection and response.
The project, titled AI-based Event Mining and Impact Evaluation of Maritime Shipping Disruptions, combines PSA BDP’s logistics expertise with A*STAR IHPC’s capabilities in AI, modelling, and simulation.
The system will use data from sources such as AIS and other public information to assess terminal capacity, detect disruptions, and propose mitigation strategies. Large language models will also be explored to analyse unstructured data, including regulatory and market updates.
By integrating simulation with AI-driven analysis, the project aims to provide logistics providers, shipping lines, and port operators with tools for earlier detection and faster response to disruption events.
The model will be tested and validated in Singapore before potential global deployment, the partners note.
“Big data and AI have the potential to transform how shippers and solution providers manage risk and build resilience across global shipping networks,” said Dr Su Yi, Executive Director, A*STAR IHPC.
“This is especially important for Singapore, a key node in the international maritime system to maintain its reliability amid a rapidly changing environment.”
The research is supported by the Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) under Phase 2 of the Maritime AI Research Programme, with funding from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).
