ABS has agreed a deal to acquire the MetaSHIP intellectual property and related vessel simulator software from Orka Informatics, expanding its portfolio of digital and game-based maritime training systems.
The acquisition, which remains subject to regulatory approval in Türkiye, forms part of the classification society’s growth plan for ABS Training Solutions. The MetaSHIP software will be used to scale ABS’s immersive learning programmes globally, providing training on board, in port, or remotely, as well as through ABS learning centres in Qatar, Greece and Singapore.
The MetaSHIP platform delivers game-based training using virtual vessels within a digital maritime environment, allowing seafarers to develop practical skills without requiring time at sea. The system also includes the ODENES training management tool and the Navigational Skill and Behavioural Assessment module, designed to evaluate and enhance user performance.

“Investment in advanced training that delivers true competence rather than minimum standards is not optional; it is a strategic imperative for fleet safety and resilience, environmental compliance and global maritime competitiveness.”
ABS has also appointed Campbell Smith as Senior Vice President of ABS Training Solutions to lead expansion of its training portfolio. Smith joins the organisation in November from Maersk Training, where he is currently Chief Commercial Officer.
