Samsung Heavy Industries’ autonomous and remote operation systems get class approval

Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has been granted two new certifications by ClassNK for its latest autonomous and remote vessel operation technologies — the Samsung Remote Operation Center (SROC) and the Samsung Autonomous Navigation Assistance System – Integrated Bridge Software (SAS-IBS).

The SROC system supports shore-based monitoring and remote operational support for vessels, part of SHI’s broader strategy to deliver capabilities for automated and autonomous ship management.

Following a safety review based on ClassNK’s Guidelines for Automated/Autonomous Operation of Ships, the classification society confirmed the design’s compliance and issued an Approval in Principle (AiP).

ClassNK said the assessment included a full HAZID risk analysis involving multiple stakeholders to verify the system’s safety and reliability in line with evolving regulatory and operational requirements for autonomous technologies.

In parallel, ClassNK awarded a Technology Qualification (TQ) for SHI’s SAS-IBS, one of the core software components of the shipbuilder’s Autonomous Navigation Assistance System (SAS). The system combines situational awareness, collision and grounding risk assessment, route planning, and alert management.

The qualification followed testing under ClassNK’s Guidelines for Technology Qualification, including simulation-based validation and safety evaluations of the software’s autonomous control functions.
