Automated cargo evacuation system planned for Machilipatnam Port

Indian public sector organisation BEML has signed a quadripartite Memorandum of Understanding with the Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and Umeandus Technologies India to develop a real-time automatic cargo evacuation system at Machilipatnam Port on the coast of Bay of Bengal.

The project aims to introduce an automated cargo handling technology, dubbed the ‘Enhanced Freight Transport System’, to improve the efficiency of port operations.

Under the MoU, the four organisations will act as a Port Alliance to design and deliver a pilot project incorporating real-time monitoring and automated cargo movement.

The partners say the system is intended to modernise cargo flows within the port area and contribute to wider multimodal freight improvements. The initiative forms part of plans to upgrade port infrastructure as trade volumes increase and operational demands grow.

Machilipatnam Port is expected to use the pilot as a foundation for future technology expansions as automation becomes more widely adopted in Indian port operations.
