Nippon Paint Marine and LR collaborate on coating performance analysis

Nippon Paint Marine has agreed a technical collaboration with Lloyd’s Register Advisory to conduct an independent assessment of long-term speed-loss performance for its hull coatings in accordance with the ISO 19030 performance-measurement standard.

Lloyd’s Register Advisory will analyse vessels coated with the FASTAR and AQUATERRAS products across a range of sectors, including container ships, bulk carriers, tankers, VLCCs, PCCs and cruise vessels. The study aims to quantify speed loss, fuel savings and emissions reductions to support coating selection and future investment decisions.

Multiple data sources, such as noon reports, high-frequency vessel data, AIS and metocean inputs, will be included in the modelling to create a validated database for benchmarking over time. Environmental effects will be isolated to evaluate coating performance throughout the assessment period.

“Trust and proof in performance and return on investment is a critical element in driving the uptake of clean technologies across the shipping industry.  Working with Lloyd’s Register to rigorously verify the effectiveness of our hull coatings solutions is an essential step in this process,” said Gladys Goh, President of Nippon Paint Marine.

“Our technical collaboration with Lloyd’s Register will provide the insight and guidance to our customers, which will provide them with the confidence that they need and help them to choose the right hull coatings for their vessels and fleets, tailored to their operating conditions and in line with their sustainability strategies.”
