KR approves machine learning-based fuel reduction methodology

Korean Register (KR) has awarded an Approval in Principle (AIP) to G-Marine Service for its machine learning-based fuel reduction calculation technology, designed to provide an objective assessment of how energy-saving devices and voyage optimisation technologies perform under varying operational conditions.

The system developed by G-Marine Service uses ship operational data and machine learning to predict expected fuel consumption under specific conditions. By comparing these predictions with actual fuel use, the system can quantitatively calculate fuel savings.

The model specifically analyses the impact of wind speed, sea state, currents, and draught to correct for environmental variables, which the company says will allow for more accurate performance tracking.

“This AIP acquisition is a meaningful achievement that officially recognises the reliability of the fuel-saving calculation system we have developed,” said Kwon Chi Oh, Chief Executive Officer of G-Marine Service (translated from Korean).

“In particular, it is expected to provide a more systematic way for shipowners to verify fuel efficiency improvements when adopting energy-saving equipment, while also enabling equipment suppliers to explain performance in quantitative terms.”
