MOL launches AI operations platform with IBM Japan

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and IBM Japan have jointly developed an artificial intelligence (AI) powered platform integrating a range of data related to vessel operations to improve operational decision-making.

The platform centrally manages information that was previously dispersed across multiple separate sources, including weather and sea conditions, navigation status, and geopolitical developments.

It is designed to support the activities of the MOL Safety Operation Supporting Centre (SOSC), a central hub that continuously monitors affiliated vessels around the world to provide operational advice and prevent serious maritime accidents.

The development process leveraged the IBM Garage methodology, an end-to-end approach covering system design, development, and implementation.

The new platform also offers decision support via AI assistant, with generative AI identifying risks faced by vessels in real time by analysing current operational details alongside historically accumulated vessel records to support situation assessment and prioritisation of decisions.

The system leverages past accident records, response case studies, and field insights to enable organisation-wide sharing and analysis.
