Rakuten Symphony has secured a full-scale implementation agreement with South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean to integrate its Rakuten Maritime vessel cybersecurity platform across the shipbuilder’s design, construction, and operational phases.
Delivered in collaboration with Korean cybersecurity partner Cytur, the deployment will integrate Rakuten Maritime’s cybersecurity-by-design framework into Hanwha Ocean’s shipbuilding processes to strengthen cyber resilience from the earliest stages of vessel development.
The integration is intended to scale across Hanwha Ocean’s production output, with the South Korean yard building approximately 45 commercial and naval vessels annually at its five-square kilometre facility in Geoje.
During the initial design phase, Hanwha Ocean will utilise specialised Threat Intelligence and Threat Modeler modules to identify and mitigate cyber risks before construction begins.
The shipbuilder will also deploy Scanner portable technology for onboard equipment risk assessments, alongside Threat Analysis and Risk Manager modules on selected vessels currently under construction.
The system is designed to identify and address vulnerabilities early in the construction process to reduce operational risks and potential costs after vessel delivery.
“As vessel digitalisation accelerates across the global shipping sector, cybersecurity has become a critical factor influencing safety, quality and regulatory compliance,” said a spokesperson for Hanwha Ocean’s Merchant Ship Business Division.
“The solution strengthens our ability to systematically incorporate advanced cybersecurity requirements during the design phase and enhance cyber risk management for both onboard equipment and vessels under construction.”
The deployment also addresses maritime regulatory mandates, including the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) Unified Requirements (UR) E26 and E27 governing cyber resilience.
“By integrating these tools from the outset of design and construction rather than treating security as an afterthought, Hanwha Ocean is establishing a new standard for proactive, lifecycle risk management across the maritime industry,” said Ryan Son, President of the Internet Services Business Unit at Rakuten Symphony and Head of Rakuten Maritime.
