HD Hyundai Samho, Avikus and ClassNK in autonomous navigation design agreement

HD Hyundai Samho, Avikus and ClassNK have agreed a joint development project to assess the integration of Avikus’ HINAS Control autonomous navigation system into the design of an 180K LNG carrier.

The project will examine the design requirements for applying the system to an actual vessel under construction, with ClassNK reviewing the design against its Guidelines for Automated/Autonomous Operation of Ships.

HD Hyundai Samho will develop the basic vessel design incorporating the requirements for the targeted autonomous navigation notation, while Avikus will provide HINAS Control and technical support covering its autonomous navigation algorithms and system functions.

ClassNK will conduct the design review and assessment against the notation requirements.

“This MoU marks an important first step toward securing advanced autonomous navigation technology by proactively obtaining Approval in Principle for compliance with classification notation requirements,” said Hak-Mu Shim, Executive Vice President and Head of Design Division at HD Hyundai Samho.

“By combining ClassNK’s regulatory expertise, Avikus’s cutting-edge autonomous technology, and HD Hyundai Samho’s shipbuilding capabilities, we look forward to providing safer and more innovative autonomous vessel solutions to our customers.”
