Shelf Drilling has completed two major upgrades of its IT systems, implementing a software-defined network management (SD-WAN) system across its fleet of 36 jack-up rigs, as well as installing Starlink on selected rigs currently operating in the Mediterranean and the North Sea.
The upgraded systems will be delivered by Marlink, the company’s existing satcom service provider. Marlink subsidiary ITC Global was awarded the first contract for communications services by Shelf Drilling in 2014, with renewals in 2018 and 2021. The award of the new contract will extend the relationship by another three years.
The SD-WAN technology will be deployed across the entire Shelf Drilling fleet, optimising and managing network traffic to ensure high throughput and low latency. The Starlink package, serving as a secondary communications channel, will be used to support client usage onboard and improve welfare services for the crew.
