Gasum reports that it has signed an agreement with DNV to verify the accuracy of its FuelEU Maritime pooling service, using DNV’s Emissions Connect tool to collect and validate emissions data.
The system will monitor fuel consumption and emissions data in real time across all vessels in the pool. At the end of the year, DNV will verify the pool’s emissions balance for EU reporting, a requirement introduced under the FuelEU Maritime regulation. Pool members will still be able to use their preferred verifier for individual vessel compliance.
“In managing a pooling service like this, data is critical. Everything comes down to the validity of the data we collect as it enables us to keep the pool tightly in balance at all times,” said Jani Arala, Solution Lead at Gasum.
“DNV’s Emissions Connect is the most reliable and easy to use tool on the market for gathering the data. DNV is a fantastic collaborator for us for this brand new service, because the company is trusted by all players in the industry and we have a long history together.”
FuelEU Maritime requires vessel owners to reduce the carbon intensity of purchased fuel, starting with a 2% reduction and increasing to 80% by 2050. The regulation allows voluntary pooling of emission reductions, where over-compliant vessels can offset emissions for under-compliant ones.
Gasum’s pooling service aims to help shipping companies manage compliance costs by supplying ultra-low emission bio-LNG and offering over-compliance to conventional fuel vessels. The company states that bio-LNG, a fully renewable fuel, can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to fossil fuels, with emissions even turning negative when produced from manure.
