ABS and Korean standards agency partner on smart ship certification

ABS has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) to support the international standardisation of smart ship and shipyard technologies.

The agreement provides a framework for collaboration through joint workshops and seminars focused on shipbuilding, maintenance, repair and overhaul technologies. It also includes plans to develop a conformity assessment framework for verifying equipment compliance with international regulations.

“It’s important to have an open dialogue with valued colleagues to address technical, operational and regulatory topics,” said John McDonald, ABS President and COO.

“We are delighted to have this opportunity to work with KATS and are looking forward to finding efficiencies related to smart technologies and equipment compliance.”

The partnership aims to streamline certification procedures for Korean equipment manufacturers and support global alignment on emerging standards for digital ship technologies.
