Samsung Heavy Industries has opened a Samsung Remote Operation Center (SROC) at Evergreen’s headquarters in Taipei, the first shipbuilder–operator collaboration of its kind, according to the companies.
The SROC will provide a land-based control tower to monitor vessel data and key equipment in real time, supporting inspections, condition-based maintenance and remote monitoring.
Evergreen says that it plans to link the set-up to an increasing number of ships over time following earlier function tests on a 15,000 TEU vessel on the Oakland–Kaohsiung route.
The partners will also use SROC as the platform to expand remote periodic inspections and develop capabilities for remotely operated autonomous vessels.
John Choe, head of Samsung Heavy’s Autonomous Navigation Research Center, said that SROC is expected to act as a “second bridge” to support navigation and emergency response activities during digitalisation.
