Conference Agenda // 3 FEBRUARY 2026

  • Panel 1: Fleet Optimisation in Complex Corridors – AI, Data and Real-Time Decision Making
Panel 1: Fleet Optimisation in Complex Corridors – AI, Data and Real-Time Decision Making 10:35 AM

The Red Sea, Gulf and Indian Ocean are increasingly operated as a single, high-risk, data-driven corridor. This panel looks at how shipowners and operators are using AI, real-time data and digital tools to make better routing, speed, fuel and scheduling decisions across this region, and how ports and service providers are increasingly connecting into those fleet-level decisions rather than operating in isolation.

    Guiding points:
    • How shipowners and operators are using AI and decision-support tools for routing, speed, fuel and corridor risk management across the Red Sea, Gulf and Indian Ocean
    • How fleet operations centres combine vessel data, weather, port readiness and security inputs to manage disruption and maintain schedule integrity
    • What “intelligent corridor management” looks like from the bridge and the fleet control room, not just from the port
    • How port call optimisation and just-in-time arrival are changing speed orders, bunker use and voyage planning for real vessels
    • What data shipowners and charterers actually need from ports to make better operational decisions
    • Where integration still breaks down between ship systems, operators, charterers and ports, and what is improving in practice

    Moderated by:
Rob O’Dwyer, Chief Network Officer, Smart Maritime Network

    Panellists include:
Capt. Abhishek Sabharwal, Head of Operations, UAFL
Capt. Thomas Varghese, Managing Director, Synergy Mideast Ship Management
Chakib Abi Saab, Chief Technology & Innovation Officer, Lloyd’s Register
Jaideep Vohra, Director - Fleet Performance and Engineering, Bahri
Nathaji Talur Dhayalan, Head – IT & Communications, Emarat Maritime LLC

  • Panel 2: Putting People First in Smart Shipping – Leadership, Skills, Welfare, Inclusion
Panel 2: Putting People First in Smart Shipping – Leadership, Skills, Welfare, Inclusion 11:30 AM

As ports and fleets become smarter and more automated, people remain the most important part of the system. This panel looks at how companies across the region are preparing crews and shore teams for AI supported operations, supporting welfare and mental health and building more inclusive, resilient maritime workplaces.

    Guiding points:
    • How roles are changing in fleet control rooms, bridge teams, engine rooms and port operations as digital tools and AI arrive
    • Training and upskilling for digital systems and decision support tools, including for seafarers and VTS staff
    • Crew welfare and mental health in a more data driven, time pressured operating environment
    • Inclusion and diversity in maritime teams and leadership
    • Attracting and retaining younger talent in Gulf maritime, and keeping sea and shore careers attractive

    Moderated by:
    Julian Panter, CEO, Noatum CSM

    Panellists include:
Christopher Kirton, Managing Director, International Tanker Management Ltd.
Islam ElNakib, Professor of Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Effat University

    Roundtable Discussion Sessions 1:45 PM

Each table will focus on a unique topic centred around the Smart Maritime Network goal of establishing better collaboration and standardisation in maritime technology. The roundtable discussions will take place simultaneously, followed by a summary of the items discussed presented to the audience by each table host, to ensure that all participants get the most from their attendance. Delegates are invited to choose any table topic they wish from the options available.

The tables themselves will last for 30 minutes with 30 minutes for summaries.

  • Panel 3: Smart Port Call Orchestration: Agencies, Data and Collaboration
Panel 3: Smart Port Call Orchestration: Agencies, Data and Collaboration 3:25 PM

Digitalisation is changing what it means to be a maritime agency or port service provider. Port calls are more complex, stakeholders are more numerous and expectations on visibility and reliability are rising.

This session looks at the next generation of maritime agency and port service models, where agents, terminals, ports and ship operators are digitally connected so that everyone can plan and execute port calls more efficiently together.

We will explore how data flows between stakeholders, how digital first agencies and platforms are emerging, and what this means in practice for shipping lines, operators and ports in the region.

    Guiding points:
    • Pain points today
    - Where port calls and services still break down
    - Fragmented communication, manual status updates and lack of a single view for all stakeholders

    • What a more intelligent agency looks like in practice
    - Examples of digital port service platforms and agency tools already in use
    - How they connect port community systems, terminals, pilots, towage, bunker, customs and shipping lines
    - Where data comes from, who sees what and how decisions are made faster

    • Impact on owners and operators
    - How better port call orchestration changes voyage planning, schedules, bunker strategy and onboard workload
    - How port call and agency data feeds into fleet operations centres and optimisation tools

    • Business models and roles
    - Who plays the “orchestrator” role today in key ports, and how this might evolve
    - How ports, agencies, shipping lines and neutral platforms work together
    - Commercial and governance questions around data, responsibilities and SLAs

    • Moving from reactive to proactive
    - Steps that panellists have taken to move from manual, reactive processes to more predictive, insight driven ways of working
    - Lessons learned from pilots and rollouts in the Gulf and wider region

    Moderated by:
Sharang Gupta, Partner, PwC Middle East

    Panellists include:
Abdel Raouf, Partner, PwC Middle East
Anna Holm Gjeraker, Head of Strategy & Operations, CEATAEC/Wilhelmsen Group

Rafael Vicens, Regional Head – IMEA, Maersk Project Logistics

  • Panel 4: Maritime Decarbonisation in Practice
Panel 4: Maritime Decarbonisation in Practice 4:25 PM

Owners and operators in the Middle East are moving from strategy to delivery on decarbonisation. This session focuses on what is happening at fleet level today and what is planned for the next five years.

Speakers will share concrete examples of LNG and alternative fuel projects retrofit and newbuild decisions, use of digital twins and voyage optimisation, and how regulations like CII and EU ETS are shaping commercial choices in the region.

    Guiding points:
    • Real projects and decisions, not just targets - Examples of newbuilds, retrofits, fuel choices and operational changes already in motion
    • LNG and beyond - How LNG is used today and how owners are evaluating methanol, ammonia, biofuels and hybrid solutions
    • Digital twins and data driven performance - How digital twins, IoT data and analytics are used to monitor hull, engine and voyage performance for specific vessels or classes
    • Voyage and fleet optimisation - Using routing, speed management, weather and port call optimisation to cut fuel and emissions while keeping schedules and contracts on track
    • Regulation and commercial impact - How CII, EU ETS and other rules are influencing chartering, deployment and contract structures for Gulf based fleets
    • Working with ports and partners - The role of ports, terminals, fuel suppliers and technology partners in helping owners meet decarbonisation goals

Moderated by: Maria Fernanda Poveda Franco, Group Communications Director, GAC

    Panellists include:
Capt Abhay Nimbalkar, CEO, Greenfield Marine Technologies
