Hyundai Glovis to monitor cargo using IoT

Hyundai Glovis has announced plans to use Internet of Things (IoT) devices to collect data such as changes in temperature and humidity alongside the frequency of external shocks during the cargo transportation process.

The technology will be introduced this year for a one-year trial involving the international transportation of automotive Knock-Down (KD) parts. Hyundai Glovis manages the transport of these parts in containers, acting as a forwarder for shipments from South Korea to production plants in North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia.

The transport of these cargoes involves long distances across both land and sea. For example, cargo moving from Busan to Alabama via Los Angeles travels 9,700km by container ship before being moved by land.

The IoT devices will allow the company to gather real-time location data as well as information on the temperature, humidity and tilt of the cargo in each section of the journey.

The system includes a notification function to allow shore-based teams to identify sudden environmental changes or abnormal signs immediately. The information gathered during the trial will be transmitted to a dedicated platform and stored in a database.

“Data collection and analysis in the transportation process are essential factors for strengthening supply chain stability,” a Hyundai Glovis official said (translated from Korean).

“We plan to build a more detailed data-driven transportation management system to enhance transportation quality and increase customer satisfaction.”

Looking forward, Hyundai Glovis says that it intends to expand its use of IoT monitoring to other areas, such as battery and refrigerated cargo projects, where handling stability and environmental control are also key issues.
