DNV launches AI tool to simplify access to maritime regulations

DNV has launched RuleAgent, an AI-powered tool that allows users to ask natural-language questions to navigate more than 30,000 pages of technical rules, standards and regulatory material across multiple documents and editions.

The platform searches the DNV database in real time to identify relevant paragraphs, providing summaries and references to official sources for traceability. When vessel information is available, the tool uses specific ship types and class notations to provide targeted regulatory guidance.

“By applying advanced AI to our rule framework, we are strengthening how our customers access trusted technical knowledge,” said Cristina Saenz de Santa Maria, Interim CEO Maritime at DNV.

“This supports more efficient decision making and helps the industry navigate an increasingly complex regulatory landscape.”

RuleAgent covers a wide range of documentation, including Rules for Ships (RU SHIP), Rules for Offshore Units (RU OU), Class Guidelines (CG), Class Programmes (CP), Statutory Interpretations (SI), Standards (ST), Offshore Standards (OS), and Recommended Practices (RP).

The class society notes that the tool has been piloted with selected customers to refine the user experience and that it plans to expand the range of documents covered by the system as part of its ongoing digitalisation strategy.
