Gearbulk adopts electronic training record books

Gearbulk Norway has expanded its use of the BASSnet application package by implementing an electronic training record book across its fleet of 50 vessels and its main office in Bergen, as well as other global locations.

The digital system aims to replace manual, paper-based records with an electronic and integrated workflow to support crew competence development and operational safety.

“By digitalising the process, we have better visibility into crew progress, faster evaluations, and a more standardised approach to competence management across the fleet,” said Capt Ivan Sosic, Marine Training Manager at Gearbulk.

“It enables us to develop, review and revise our training programmes centrally and with ease. We see clear operational and business value in the digital Training Record Book.”

The software is integrated within the BASSnet HR Manager system and is accessible through the BASSnet Crew Portal mobile application. This setup allows trainees, superior officers, and onboard assessors to collaborate throughout the training process.

Crew members can log tasks digitally, upload supporting documentation, and monitor approval status in real time. Officers and onboard assessors can then review and validate training records before submitting them to shore management.

“Competence management is essential for high quality operations. The BASSnet Electronic Training Record Book enables companies like Gearbulk to eliminate inefficiencies associated with paper-based processes while improving training quality, transparency, crew pool development, and operational safety,” said Per Steinar Upsaker, CEO and Managing Director at BASS Software.
