Davie establishes autonomous vessel company in Canada

Davie Shipbuilding has established a new Ontario-based company, Davie Autonomous, to manufacture and integrate uncrewed and autonomous maritime vessels and systems in Canada.

The newly created company will initially focus on producing composite uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) developed in partnership with Kraken Technology Group, following a strategic collaboration announced by the companies in May.

Davie is also in negotiations with sites in Ontario to establish a production network combining the province’s manufacturing, composites, robotics and automation capabilities with Davie’s shipbuilding and systems integration expertise.

The company says the facilities will be supported by suppliers across Canada as part of a national manufacturing strategy.

“Davie Autonomous brings together the best of Canadian shipbuilding, advanced manufacturing and technology to build a new sovereign capability,” said Lindsey Kettel, President of Davie.

“It is an all-of-Canada investment that will create high-value jobs while strengthening Canada’s leadership in autonomous maritime solutions.”

In addition to USV production, Davie Autonomous will develop mission systems, software and payload integration for applications including surveillance, search and rescue, coastal security, critical infrastructure protection and defence.
