Newport adds OneWeb to Starlink-equipped fleet

Greek ship management company Newport has added OneWeb connectivity across its fleet to complement its existing Starlink deployment as part of a strategy to improve the resilience of its onboard communications.

The company says the dual low earth orbit (LEO) approach is intended to provide connectivity in regions where Starlink coverage is limited, including China and India, while adding redundancy for onboard communications.

Newport adopted Starlink in collaboration with service provider Navarino to support cloud applications, remote IT support, crew welfare and digital operations, while reducing communications costs.

The fleet also uses Navarino’s Cosmo connectivity management platform, which consolidates connectivity services into a single interface to provide visibility of network performance and centralise communications management.

Navarino says the addition of OneWeb reflects increasing demand from shipowners for dual-LEO connectivity to improve network resilience.

“We are seeing a growing trend among customers that are seeking to add an extra layer of connectivity to their LEO setups,” said Ioannis Brougiannakis, Navarino’s Account Manager for Newport.

“I am very proud to be working with the Newport team on this dual LEO approach that brings redundant, high speed, low-latency internet to their fleet, thanks to the combination of OneWeb and Starlink networks.”
