GomSpace joins ESA Arctic satcom study

GomSpace has joined an ESA-funded study examining the requirements for a future satellite constellation providing secure digital communications for ships operating in the Arctic.

The six-month study brings together GomSpace, Sternula, London Economics Denmark and Canadian Arctic consultancy PIRC to assess user requirements, system concepts and commercial models for a potential constellation.

The project has a total value of DKK3.8 million (approx. US$590,000), and is intended to provide a basis for potential follow-on investment and a future demonstration mission.

“As Arctic activity increases, the need for resilient, high-integrity communication becomes unavoidable,” said Oliver Schiewe, Vice President of Business Unit Satellite Systems at GomSpace.

“This study is an important step toward a viable future constellation, and we are pleased to contribute our technology and operational know-how to help shape a system that can deliver long-term value for Arctic stakeholders.”

The study is scheduled to run until February 2027.
