La Méridionale records 2% fuel reduction with energy management system

Wärtsilä’s Eniram division has implemented a range of new energy management technologies for French ferry operator La Méridionale, as part of a fleet digitalisation programme under which the ferry company aims to more efficiently employ its resources and minimise its impact on the environment.

The ‘Piana’, a ro-pax ferry that travels between Marseille and Corsica, was first equipped with Eniram trim and speed systems in April 2017. The evaluation period for the technologies, which ended in summer 2018, resulted in annualised fuel savings of around 2%, the companies said, creating a return on investment period of just two years.

The reduction in fuel consumption recorded also delivered a corresponding reduction in exhaust emissions.

“Performance is one of our core values. To develop our technological capability, we chose Wärtsilä’s Eniram energy management and optimisation technology,” said Christophe Seguinot, Technical Director, La Méridionale.

“Together with Wärtsilä, we were able to achieve tangible and sustainable savings, which have been accessed thanks to their advanced products, support and training. We will definitely scale these great results to our entire fleet while discovering new possibilities for utilising the data.”

La Méridionale runs a daily service from Marseille to Corsica, as well as a once-weekly service to Sardinia for both passengers and freight.
